Shepherds, What Do You See?

Saturday, December 17, 2016, 7:30 pm

The Community Chorus will be presenting music for the Christmas season, with a brass ensemble and guest organist Stephen White.  The featured work on the program is the Christmas Cantata by American composer Daniel Pinkham, celebrating the coming of the shepherds in a festive and unique way.  Other featured composers and arrangers include Gustav Holst, Morton Lauridsen, Alice Parker and Paul Brandvik.

“Pinkham wrote this piece in the 20th century, but he said he borrowed elements of style from much older models, such as the Venetian music of Giovanni Gabrieli and even Gregorian chant,” says conductor Clayton Parr.  “In that way, the piece is contemporary and familiar at the same time.  It begins with the words ‘Quem vidistis, pastores?’ which means ‘What did you see, shepherds?’ - that sets up a kind of dialog, where the chorus, the organ and the brass all participate.”

Come and join us!
