Hiring Procedures and Requirements
Community Music School offers private instruction in most band and orchestra instruments, piano, voice, and guitar, as well as Music First classes for infant through 5 years. Also offered are Bucket Beats (Bucket Drumming classes) and Suzuki violin. CMS hires based on resume, interview and performance. Prospective faculty with at least the following qualifications may submit resumes at any time:
Bachelor’s degree in music
Proficiency and continuing performance on major instrument(s)
Three years teaching experience
Two professional references available for contact by the CMS

Our Private Lessons are offered in 20-min, 30-min, 45-min and 60-min time blocks. We are open for lessons Monday – Thursday 9:00am – 8:00pm, on Friday from 9:00am-6:00pm, and on Saturday from 10:00am-2:00pm. We offer lesson times based on your availability. Our busiest lesson time tends to be from 1:00pm-7:00pm.
Prospective Faculty FAQ's
• What is the current rate of pay?
$8.75 each for 20-minute lessons, and $25.25/hr for all other lessons. Class rates range from $26.50-$38/hr. The Music Center also pays 7.65% in social security contributions, which benefits the faculty, as they do not pay self-employment tax on this income. Pay is biweekly.
• Are there opportunities for students and faculty to
Each CMS site offers monthly Spotlight Recitals.. Students are encouraged to perform often to improve their skills. Faculty are expected to perform to keep up their skills, though it need not be at the CMS.
• Will I be evaluated?
The CMS evaluates faculty by observation and family feedback.
• When can I start?
As soon as students are available. Often we have a high demand for teachers, although occasionally there is a wait.
• Are faculty paid for missed lessons?
Faculty are paid for a lesson they miss when it is made up. If a student cancels, the faculty is paid when the lesson was scheduled, and are asked to make up one student-canceled lesson per semester per student, schedule permitting. Faculty are paid for no-shows, and the lesson is not made up. There are make up weeks at the end of Fall and Winter semesters, and other times can be arranged as well.

CMS financial aid is available to families with under $50,000 in annual income. Other aid is available to qualifying families from area foundations and organizations. For more information, please contact the Music Center.
